06-04-15 The Great Fawn Rescue

About 10ish this morning Roadie, Joe Friday and I took a road trip. We ended up on the trail that leads down to the Creosote Plant. Joe ducked out of frame just as I snapped the shot.20150604b-Roadie-(2)

It was a gorgeous Spring day.20150604b-Roadie-(1)We got down to the water just as a ferry left Eagle Harbor.20150604b-Roadie-(3)

Got the Space Needle on the deck of the ferry

Crows a coupla feet above us in the cedar were most vocal
about their displeasure with our presence.

As we headed back, we met a woman, Shirley, who was very distraught because she found a wounded fawn on the trail. She put her two dogs in her car. I called the local police and got a phone number of a wildlife organization on Bainbridge. Roadie, Joe & I walked with Shirley to see the fawn. I handed Shirley my phone. She called the wildlife people while I examined the fawn.FawnThe little fella was unhurt. (this picture is from the web, but pretty close to the fawn looked like).
On the advice of the wildlife people, I helped the fawn to his feet. He was very unsteady and behaved as if he were a newborn. He was completely dry, but very wobbly.

There were plenty of adult hoof prints around the fawn. The mother was close by.

Roadie was very solicitous of the fawn. Joe Friday wanted to frisk him for weapons.

We left the fawn for his mother to care for and headed back to the car.

Roadie wanted to stay and play with him.20150604b-Roadie-(13)Joe Friday thought we should have turned him over to the authorities.20150604b-Roadie-(17)But this was Roadie’s call to make. After all, Joe Friday is just a civilian now,
retired and no longer in charge. And he doesn’t miss it one bit…
nope, not one bit…
hmmm
